Job Description

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in observational galaxy evolution to work with Dr Kenneth Duncan at the Institute for Astronomy, which is part of the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh.

The primary research goal of this position is to advance our understanding of galaxy evolution, particularly the life cycle of gas in galaxies, through the combination of next-generation optical spectroscopy and radio HI surveys. The successful candidate will work together with Dr Duncan on a variety of projects with the forthcoming ORCHIDSS ESO Community Survey, depending on their research experience and interests. They will also have the opportunity to develop their own research projects with access to a wide range of multi-wavelength observations such as the MIGHTEE and LOFAR (2.0) extragalactic radio surveys, the WEAVE-LOFAR spectroscopic survey, the JWST PRIMER/JELS imaging surveys and associated spectroscopic follow-up campaigns.

Applicants with a background in observational studies of galaxy/AGN evolution are encouraged to apply. Experience of working with large multi-wavelength datasets, in particular multi-object spectroscopy or HI radio observations is particularly desirable. Candidates should have completed all requirements for a PhD in astronomy by the position start date.

Starting date is flexible but no later than October 1st 2024. The position is offered initially for a fixed term of 2 years with strong prospects for extension beyond this. The closing date for applications is 26 January 2024. Applicants should include a CV, a 2-page research statement (summarising current research interests and future plans) and the names of two referees.
