Applications are invited for a post doctoral position on X-ray emission from the Milky Way, the Galactic center and the Galactic outflow, within the framework of the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF) - Osservatorio Astronomico di Brera.
INAF is a world leading institute, the primary and largest institute in Italy for research in Astrophysics.
The successful applicant is expected to become one of the driving forces of the “Hot Milk” project, funded by the European Research Council, and aimed at characterising the hot diffuse emission and point sources of the Milky Way. The project, performed under the supervision of Dr. Gabriele Ponti, will revolve around the analysis and interpretation of X-ray data from the Chandra large survey of the central degrees of the Milky Way, the XMM Heritage program covering the central disc of the Milky Way (PI: G. Ponti), as well as the public eROSITA data, aimed at scanning the Milky Way disc, center, corona and halo. The main goals of the project will be to investigate the flows of hot plasma from the energetic sources within the disc of the Milky Way, to the halo and beyond, as well as to compare the inferred properties of the hot circum-Galactic medium in the Milky Way with the emission at other wavelengths and in other galaxies.
Applications from non-X-ray-experts are also highly encouraged.
The appointment will be for 2 years, with the possibility of an extension for the duration of the Hot Milk project. Applicants should submit their documents including a CV, a list of publications, a brief (~1 page) description or research interests and two recommendation letters by August 31th, 2022.
INAF is an equal-opportunity employer and women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
