Job Description

DESY, with its 2700 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

The DESY astroparticle groups are involved in the major neutrino (lceCube) and gamma-ray observatories (H.E.S.S., MAGIC, VERITAS), and among the leading institutions in the future projects CTA and lceCube-Gen2. Furthermore, DESY is a member of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), with a central activity in real-time, multi-messenger astronomy, and is preparing for the ULTRASAT satellite mission. The experimental groups collaborate in the application of modern data analysis methods, support the development of open-source scientific software, and are accompanied by a vibrant astroparticle theory group.

The position

The field of real-time multimessenger astronomy is entering an exciting phase as information regarding the variable universe is made available immediately after observations across a range of messengers (gravitational waves, neutrinos, photons). These rich datasets enable novel science but also put increasing demands on our capabilities to evaluate complex, large datasets in real time. DESY groups have been at the forefront of many recent discoveries in the field. We are now looking for additional members to strengthen the team. The positions foresee 1) the advancement of multi-messenger analysis using data from ZTF, lceCube, and other observatories, and/or 2) the further development of AMPEL, a scalable analysis framework for data streams that is being developed together with the Humboldt University of Berlin.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in physics, astronomy or computer science or equivalent qualification
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: data analysis in astroparticle physics and astronomy, streaming data analysis, machine learning, data visualization, scientific software development
  • Excellent knowledge of English

For further information please contact Marek Kowalski ([email protected]).

The position is limited to 2 years with the possibility for an extension.

Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organisations in Germany. Classification is based upon qualifications and assigned duties. Handicapped persons will be given preference to other equally qualified applicants. DESY operates flexible work schemes. DESY is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and encourages applications from women. Vacant positions at DESY are in general open to part-time work. During each application procedure DESY will assess whether the post can be filled with part-time employees.
