Job Description

The Space Telescope Science Institute, located on the campus of Johns Hopkins University, is seeking Archive Scientists for our Operations and Engineering Division, Archive Sciences Branch. Come join the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST) team. MAST is looking for Archive Scientists to provide scientific, technical and computational expertise for the MAST Archive including support of the Hubble Space Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope holdings.

The archive scientists will support archive projects to enhance the scientific utilization of the data and meta-data through existing and future data-mining techniques. In addition, the archive scientists will participate in planning, definition and implementation of processes, procedures and tools supporting JWST archive.

Requirements:

This position requires a PhD in Astronomy, Physics, or a related field. Successful candidates should have 4 or more years of experience in an astronomical research role or as an observatory scientist supporting for astronomical research. Candidates with a relevant Master's or Bachelor's degree with 8 or more years of experience in astronomical research or observatory scientist/support functions will be considered. Substitution of additional relevant education or experience for stated qualifications may be considered. The starting position and salary are commensurate with education and experience.

Familiarity with Python or IDL is required.

Familiarity with one or more of the following is a plus:

• Astronomy tools and packages (e.g. AstroPy, Glue, PyRAF/STSDAS, Astrodrizzle)
• Relevant software programming languages (e.g. Python, IDL)
• Computer operating systems (Mac OSX, Linux, Unix, Windows)
• Databases
• Astrometry and photometry derived from astronomical images
• Astronomical data (including images, spectra, catalogs, models, simulations)
• Web page creation and maintenance
• Analysis and understanding of mission requirements
• Procedure writing and maintenance

The ideal candidate will possess strong verbal and written communication skills, work with minimum supervision, be self-motivated, and interact well with colleagues and outside groups.

This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements.
