Description: The Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology (KIPAC) is seeking an Outreach and Engagement Manager. The successful candidate will work with KIPAC leadership and KIPAC members to develop, coordinate, and implement initiatives that engage the public with scientific discovery, broaden participation in astrophysics, and integrate equity and diversity as core values of the institute’s activities. This position is fixed-term and concludes three years from the start date. The term may be extended based on program need and funding availability.

About KIPAC: The Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology is a joint institute of Stanford University and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, and the home for astrophysics and cosmology research at Stanford. We are a vibrant community of ~150 people, including faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, and students, who are engaged in answering the biggest questions about how the Universe works.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Work with KIPAC leadership to develop an institutional strategy for impactful public engagement;

Coordinate and develop outreach and educational programs and community engagement activities for diverse public audiences;

Work with KIPAC members to develop and implement strategies for broadening participation in the field, including activities that recruit, retain, and advance students that are underrepresented in STEM;

Coordinate capability-building workshops for KIPAC members on topics such as public engagement and science communication, equity and inclusion, and effective practices in STEM outreach to underrepresented communities;

Work proactively to develop funding for innovative and inclusive engagement programs.

The successful candidate will be a core member of the Institute and needs to be self-motivated, enthusiastic, organized, and community-driven to take on this exciting role.

We are interested in candidates from a broad range of experiences and backgrounds. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position is a full-time academic professional appointment with regular University benefits. The proposed starting date is September 1, 2021 and is negotiable.


Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field.

Alternate degree fields will be considered with equivalent experience depending upon the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position.

At least three years of applicable experience working in a technical or analytical field such as professional employment or graduate/post-doctoral research experience in a STEM discipline. · Experience working with engagement programs accessible to a wide audience, including groups that are underrepresented in STEM.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrated ability to perform in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities, under minimal supervision.

Leadership and program management skills.

Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as core values.

Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and teamwork/leadership skills.

Ability to self-direct and to manage diverse stakeholders to achieve results.

Commitment to effective practices for public engagement in science.

Desired Qualifications:

Advanced degree in Astrophysics, Astronomy, Physics, or a related field.

Experience in interacting with faculty and students, and in STEM workforce management.

Experience in communicating Astronomy and Astrophysics to the public.


Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrates the ability to work well with Stanford colleagues and clients and with external organizations.

Promote Culture of Safety: Demonstrates commitment to personal responsibility and value for safety; communicates safety concerns; uses and promotes safe behaviors based on training and lessons learned.
