Job Description

Job Summary: Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join Prof. Chiara Mingarelli’s research group at the University of Connecticut for up to two years and the potential to work at the Flatiron Institute’s Center for Computational Astrophysics (CCA) for the third year. The successful candidate will work closely with her group on research topics related to the International Pulsar Timing Array, including but not limited to low-frequency gravitational-wave (GW) astrophysics, data analysis, and multimessenger astronomy. The position includes a competitive salary, research and travel funds, and access to supercomputing facilities.

The growing UConn astrophysics group, in beautiful Storrs CT, has a vibrant and collegial atmosphere which also includes research on star formation and the interstellar medium, galaxy evolution, active galactic nuclei, and computational galaxy formation in addition to GWs. The successful candidate will also benefit from frequent interactions with colleagues at the CCA -- a description of the CCA research groups and their members can be  found in the link below.

Appointment Terms: The desired start date is August 27, 2021 (with flexibility). The initial appointment at UConn is for one year, renewable for an additional year contingent upon satisfactory performance, mutual agreement, and availability of funds. Another year has the potential to be based at the CCA in New York City as a Flatiron Research Fellow.

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates are expected to have a PhD in astrophysics or a closely-related field by the start date.

Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a solid research portfolio, strong coding and analysis skills, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to promoting an inclusive community in astrophysics. They will also have interest and/or experience in working with pulsar timing array data, extragalactic astronomy, data analysis, and gravitational-wave astrophysics.

To Apply: Please submit a CV, publication list, cover letter, and a max 3 page research statement to UConn Jobs http://hr.uconn.edu/jobs > Staff Positions > Search Staff Positions > Keyword Search Astrophysics (or ID 494788). Please arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to Prof. Chiara Mingarelli ([email protected]). Evaluation of applications will begin November 2, 2020 and will continue until the position is filled. Employment of the successful candidate is contingent upon the successful completion of a Pre-Employment Criminal Background Check. The University of Connecticut is an EEO /AA Employer.
