We invite applications for two 3-year postdoctoral fellowships in galaxy evolution and the intergalactic medium at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, MD.
The successful applicants will work with Drs. Molly Peeples, Jason Tumlinson, and Gregory Snyder at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), and with their network of collaborators. Our research group is currently focused on understanding the co-evolution of gas flows and galaxies, including galaxy morphologies, chemical evolution, and the role of the circumgalactic medium (CGM), using a combination of hydrodynamic simulations, analytic modeling, and comparisons to observations. The open positions are targeted at junior scientists with primarily theoretical backgrounds, including numerical simulations. We will encourage successful applicants to lead independent research or new projects in related areas.
The nominal start date is September 2019, with a initial appointments of two years and expected renewals of up to three years, subject to satisfactory performance and the availability of funds. The starting salary depends on year of PhD and level of expertise and includes a relocation package. STScI, located on Johns Hopkins University Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, offers an excellent benefit package (including comprehensive healthcare and paid parental leave), competitive salaries, and a stimulating work environment. STScI’s pay for postdoctoral researchers is commensurate to the year of Ph.D. The postdocs will also have full access to STScI’s postdoctoral career mentoring program. We especially welcome applications from women, minorities, veterans, LBGTQ+ people, and other members of underrepresented groups.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in astronomy, physics, or a related field, by the start date. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is desirable: (a) hydrodynamic physics and simulations, (b) galaxy evolution, (c) the circumgalactic medium, (d) chemical evolution, (e) connecting synthetic data to observations.
Applicants are requested to complete an on-application through: https://stsci.slideroom.com/#/permalink/program/45484
There, the following materials will be requested in PDF format:
1) a cover letter indicating interest in the position and including a list of references;
2) a curriculum vitae, including a list of publications;
3) a summary of previous and current research (limited to three pages total, including references);
4) a summary of proposed research, limited to 3 pages text plus 2 pages references/figures.
Questions about the positions should be directed to firstname.lastname@example.org; questions regarding the application process can be directed to email@example.com.
Applications must be received by December 14, 2018 to receive full consideration. Applicants must also arrange for three confidential letters of reference to be submitted not later than the close date via the on-line application system. References will be contacted through the application system for the letter submissions. Emails will come from: firstname.lastname@example.org. Applicants should contact their letter writers separately to inform them of the process, since applications will be given full consideration only when all reference letters have been received.
