Job Description

The Extragalactic Group at Saint Mary's University in Halifax, Canada, invites applications for a postdoctoral research position with  Dr. Ivana Damjanov. The postdoctoral fellow will lead the observational projects related to galaxy evolution at intermediate redshift based on the rich dataset that includes Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam imaging and MMT/Hectospec spectroscopy (HectoMAP). We encourage the applications from researchers with the expertise in extragalactic astrophysics and the experience with optical/near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic data analysis.

The postdoctoral fellow will interact closely with the members of Dr. Damjanov's research group at Saint Mary's and her closest collaborators and HectoMAP survey leaders, Dr. Margaret Geller (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics) and Dr. Jubee Sohn (Seoul National University). In addition to the analysis of the spectro-photometric data already in hand, successful candidate will be eligible to lead the proposals for Canadian observing time on Gemini Telescopes, CFHT, and/or JWST. They will also have access to High Performance Computing resources through ACENET and Compute Canada.

The postdoctoral fellow will be located at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, a major centre on the Atlantic coast of Canada. The city of Halifax is rich in history and culture and its urban core is surrounded by stunning natural beauty. In addition, this position offers the opportunity for extended visits to the Seoul National University and Dr. Sohn's research group.

The expected start date for the postdoctoral position is summer 2022 and not later than September 1, 2022. Applicants are required to have a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics or a related field at the time of appointment. The initial appointment will be for three years, with possible extension subject to satisfactory performance and the availability of funds.

At Saint Mary’s University equity and diversity are integral to excellence. Committed to fostering an environment of inclusion and respect within our research group and beyond, we welcome applications from women, Indigenous peoples, racialized persons/visible minorities, persons with disabilities, persons of minority sexual orientation or gender identity and others who might contribute to the growth and enrichment of our community.

All interested individuals should submit a cover letter, a CV (including a list of publications), and a statement of research interests and accomplishments (no more than 3 pages). If relevant, applicants are encouraged to indicate causes of delays in their past research activity (e.g., parental leave, illness, etc.). Please combine all application documents into a single PDF attachment. All materials should be sent via email to [email protected] with "Postdoc Application - [LAST NAME-FIRST NAME]" in the subject heading. Applicants should also arrange for three reference letters.

For full consideration, please submit application materials by March 8, 2022. The referees should be instructed to provide their reference letters directly to the same email address by the same date.
