Job Description

The School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) at Arizona State University invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar in theoretical studies of the first generation of stars in the universe.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position to work in collaboration with Prof. Evan Scananpieco.

We seek a postdoctoral researcher to contribute to a theoretical program to study the evolution of the first generation of metal free (Pop III) stars. The research will focus on applying the RAMSES code to develop cosmological simulations that model turbulent mixing, chemistry, and radiative transfer to track the transition from Pop III stars to metal-enriched PopII/I stars. Working with observational experts, the team will apply these results to provide insights into how Pop III properties can be constrained using metal-poor stars observed in the Milky Way and metal-poor galaxies observed at high-redshift. More information about the department can be found here: https://sese.asu.edu/

The initial appointment is for two years with subsequent annual renewal for up to one additional year contingent upon satisfactory performance, the needs of the university, and availability of resources. The start date is negotiable, as early as June 2018. This position comes with a competitive salary, funding for travel, and full health insurance coverage. Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in Astrophysics, Physics, or closely related field by the start date, and a background in computational astrophysics with a strong publication record. Desired qualifications include strong verbal and written communication skills and experience with the RAMSES code. Candidates must be within five years from receipt of the doctoral degree.

To apply, please submit a single PDF document to [email protected] incorporating: a cover letter, contact information for three references, a curriculum vitae with a publication list, and a statement of past research accomplishments and future research goals (three pages or less)

Complete applications will be reviewed beginning Jan 1, 2018. A background check is required for employment. Postdoctoral benefits can be found at: https://cfo.asu.edu/postdoctoral-scholars
