Announcement
Job Announcement Text:

We seek to fill a postdoctoral position at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) to perform a research project in star formation. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Joseph Hora, Dr. Volker Tolls, and collaborators to conduct a study of star formation in the outer Galaxy using the recently available wealth of infrared data from Spitzer, Herschel, and WISE, and several ground-based near-infrared surveys. We will use techniques developed in studies of nearby star formation regions to locate young stellar objects in the outer Galaxy, use model-fitting to determine their properties such as luminosity and mass, and study their clustering properties. Comparing the results to star formation regions in other parts of the Galaxy will provide information on how dynamical processes can affect the mechanisms that influence the fragmentation of molecular clouds and star formation efficiency.

The applicant must have a PhD in Astronomy or Astrophysics by the date of appointment, and an excellent command of the English language (spoken and written).  The successful candidate will have experience with analysis of multi-wavelength observations (e.g., Spitzer, Herschel, and near-infrared data) and previous research experience in star formation. If necessary, follow-up observations for this project could be performed at CfA facilities, including Mt. Hopkins, Magellan Observatory, and the Submillimeter Array.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, list of publications, a statement explaining research interests and qualifications, and contact information for three references to Dr. Joseph Hora ([email protected]). Reference letters will be solicited as needed. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled with consideration guaranteed to all applications received by February, 15, 2017. Position expected to begin in Spring 2017. Informal inquiries can be directed to Dr. Hora at the above e-mail address.

This position is for two years, possibly renewable for a third year, depending on performance and future funding.

The CfA is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in its workplace.

Included Benefits:

The postdoctoral position includes health care coverage for the successful candidate and, if applicable, their family (spouse and children).
