Job Description

The Georgia State University Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy operates the CHARA Array, one of the most powerful optical interferometers in the world, at Mount Wilson Observatory in California. CHARA is seeking to hire an Optical Laboratory Assistant at the Array. This position is currently funded for five years and will be located at the Array. The job will be under the direct supervision of the Optical Systems Scientist, Dr. Judit Sturmann, and will include the following duties:

  • Daily alignment of optical systems in a laboratory environment.
  • Installation and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and optical components in an optics laboratory.
  • Identification of, and proposing solutions for, optical and mechanical problems in the optical laboratory.
  • Maintaining alignment and cleaning of telescope optics.
  • Selection and purchasing of optical, electronic and optical components.

Qualifications:

Master's degree in a related field and two years of related experience; or a combination of education and related experience. The candidate must have an excellent understanding of optics and optical equipment.

Preferred Hiring Qualifications:

  • Experience in astronomical facilities, including telescopes, interferometry, computer controlled alignment equipment, lasers and other light sources.
  • Experience in working with astronomers, physicists and other physical scientists.
  • Computer software skills including working in a Linux/Unix environment.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience in real-time problem solving.
  • Willingness to working in a remote observatory location.
