Job Description

Numerical modeling of the radiative properties of superluminous supernovae and unusual astrophysical transient phenomena in collaboration with Dr. Emmanouil Chatzopoulos's group. Emphasis will be given on radiation transport modeling of the interaction between supernova ejecta and dense circumstellar matter. Access to local (LSU) computing facilities will be provided for the purposes of this project.

Responsibilities:

  • The researcher will be directly involved with the use, evaluation and expansion of numerical radiation transfer numerical tools used in astrophysics in order to simulate the properties of superluminous supernovae and peculiar transient events. The researcher will assist the LSU Principal Investigator, Dr. Emmanouil Chatzopoulos, in directing the computational campaign that is core part of the project - 90%
  • The researcher will assist in mentoring graduate students in the development, extension and use of numerical codes for the purpose of modeling transient astrophysical phenomena.  The researcher will attend and present analysis results collaboration meetings and lead wiring of scientific papers. Some national and international travel may be required. - 10%

Qualifications:

PhD in physics or related field with experience in Numerical Methods in Astrophysics, Theoretical Astrophysics, Radiation Transport, Stellar Evolution

Preferred Qualifications:

The preferred applicant needs to have a strong computational astrophysics background and some experience with the use of radiation transfer and hydrodynamics codes commonly used to model supernovae or other astrophysical transient phenomena. Experience in parallel computing on supercomputers is also a plus. And experience in radiation transport modeling using any of the following numerical codes: SuperNu, STELLA, Sedona, CMFGEN. Stellar evolution modeling using the MESA stellar evolution code.

Some national and international travel may be required.

Special Instructions:

Please attach ALL documents under the Resume/CV section of your application. Documents needed: CV with list of publications and a 2-page Statement of Research Experience. Have three letters of recommendation directly e-mailed to Dr. Chatzopoulos ([email protected]) .

Additional Position Information:

Background Check - An offer of employment is contingent on a satisfactory pre-employment background check.
