Job Description

The Centro de Astronomía (CITEVA) at the Universidad de Antofagasta in Chile invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in extragalactic astronomy. The successful applicant will work with Prof. Laurent Chemin on the study of the kinematics and dynamics of Local Group galaxies through the analysis of stellar astrometry from the ESA-Gaia mission, in combination with stellar spectroscopy and/or HI/CO/Ha gas spectroscopy.

We seek an enthusiastic candidate with a background in modeling and analysis of astrometric and/or spectroscopic data for galaxy structure, kinematics, dynamics, stellar populations or interstellar gas. To support the research at CITEVA, the successful applicant can also have access to the 10% Chilean time guaranteed on facilities in Chile (ESO-VLT and La Silla, ALMA, Apex, Magellan, Gemini-S, SOAR, CTIO, etc.). CITEVA is an international centre based in Antofagasta, a large city on the Pacific Coast in Northern Chile, on the edge of the Atacama desert, where ALMA and ESO-VLT are located, and where the ESO- EELT is being built. CITEVA is the premier professional group in Northern Chile.

The position is funded by the Joint Committee ESO-Chile ($20.000.000 CLP/year, with additional bonuses from Universidad de Antofagasta for computing and travelling expenses), for 2 years, which can be extended through applying to Chilean grants. The expected starting date is April-June 2020 (negotiable).

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in astronomy or related field by the date of appointment. Applicants must submit a cover letter, a CV, a list of publications and a statement explaining research interests, and arrange for 3 letters of recommendation to be sent directly. All materials and additional inquiries must be sent by email to [email protected]. Applications that are complete by February 13, 2020 will receive full consideration.
