The Institute of Astronomy, KU Leuven, invites applications for multiple PhD positions in the fields of astrochemistry and exoplanets, under the supervision of Prof. Leen Decin (and co-supervisors).

3 positions in the interdisciplinary ESCHER (Extraterrestrial Prebiotic Chemistry) project:

  • Rocky exoplanets as chemical reactors
  • Characterisation of supramolecular assemblies of nucleobases and solid surfaces as organising mechanism
  • Prebiotic chemical discovery through quantum chemistry

Multiple positions in the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) CHAMELEON “Virtual Laboratories for Exoplanets and Planet Forming Disks”:

  • Cloud formation in 3D exoplanet atmospheres (at KU Leuven, Belgium)
  • Analysing observations applying complex modelling and Bayesian inference (at KU Leuven, Belgium)
  • Irradiation and impact of stellar variability on exoplanet atmospheres (at University of Copenhagen)
  • Microphysics of cloud formation: the path to heterogeneous nucleation (at University of St. Andrews, UK)
  • Modelling lightning in 3D GCMs and the detection of biosignatures (at University  of Edinburgh)

The selected PhD students at KU Leuven will be offered a 2+2-year contract. The salary will be commensurate to the standard scale for PhD students in Belgium; it includes social and medical insurance as well as pension rights. We seek excellent students with a strong background in chemistry, physical sciences, mathematics and/or astrophysics. The foreseen starting date for the positions is September 2020.
