Job Description

The Department of Physics at the University of Cambridge is seeking to appoint to a Research Associate / Senior Research Associate in Radio Astronomy to support the work of the UK Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Regional Centre (UKSRC) project.

The UKSRC, which spans 8 UK institutes, will in addition to the SKA also support SKA precursor and pathfinder science (for example eMERLIN and LOFAR) and enable a series of science demonstration projects to align work with wider science community needs. The UKSRC will be part of a global and federated network of SRCs, therefore much of the development work will be undertaken in international teams using Scaled Agile methods. Activities planned as part of this work include development of the science platform and services, approaches for scalable pipelines and data distribution. The University of Cambridge is fortunate to already host a strong SKA Science Data Handling & Processing team, and as a UKSRC High-Performance Computing (HPC) provider will also have about 5 FTEs working on the associated SRC compute platforms.

We are looking for candidates with (or close to obtaining) a PhD in astronomy, computer science, engineering, or a related discipline. A good working knowledge of python software development is essential and C++/C desirable. Several years of experience working in the area of high-performance computing or cluster computing, or working with data analysis frameworks, or parallel programming and analysis of astronomical data, or significant experience with radio telescopes is expected for appointment at the Senior Research Associate level. Candidates with less experience will be considered for appointment at the Research Associate level.

We offer the successful candidate an opportunity to be part of a strong and well supported SKA team in Cambridge.

The University actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society. For further information and to apply please visit https://www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/40377/.
