The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) invites applications for Two Postdoctoral Research Positions in Theoretical Astrophysics and/or Cosmology. Research in the Cosmology group is largely based on the development of numerical algorithms and the performance and analysis of large computer simulations. Such numerical experiments focus on the formation and evolution of cosmic structures from the largest scales, to clusters of galaxies, to detailed models of galaxies, the Milky Way, dwarf galaxies, and the interstellar medium.
Both positions are independent members of the Cosmology group. The funding for one of these positions is provided by the European Research Council (ERC) through the CRAGSMAN project “The Impact of Cosmic Rays on Galaxy and Cluster Formation” while the other position is expected to strengthen or complement the group’s research. Please indicate in your cover letter which position is more suitable to your research goals.
The positions will start in April and September 2018 (or later) and include travel, computing support and have access to HPC supercomputers. The initial appointment will be made for 2 years, with a possible extension of up to a total of 5 years, depending on experience, performance and availability of funds. The salary is based on the German public service scale (TV-L). The AIP is an equal opportunity employer, values diversity and particularly encourages applications from women.
The AIP is located in the beautiful Potsdam/Babelsberg area, at the South-western border of the Berlin metropolitan area. About 130 scientists work on a variety of astrophysical topics covering the full range from solar physics to cosmology. Potsdam is also the home of the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, the Institute for Physics & Astronomy of Potsdam University and several other research institutions.
To apply, please send a PDF file containing a research statement (up to 3 pages), a curriculum vitae and publication list, to Christoph Pfrommer via email@example.com by November 30th, 2017. Applicants should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to the same address by the same date.
