Job Description

DESCRIPTION: The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics (https://www.astro.ucsc.edu/) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Scholar. In collaboration with Professor Brant Robertson, the Postdoctoral Scholar will conduct forefront research on topics related to galaxy formation, large-scale structure, and extragalactic surveys in the UCSC Computational Astrophysics Research Group. We encourage applications from candidates with theoretical and numerical simulation expertise in galaxy formation or cosmology, experts in machine learning in astrophysics, or observers experienced in the analysis of large survey datasets. We are especially interested in candidates who have applied creativity and innovation to their research, and who can combine physical intuition with computational skills to help solve outstanding astrophysical problems. The position requires that the Postdoctoral Scholar successfully work independently and collaborate collegially with faculty and students. We encourage applications by candidates from diverse backgrounds, who have overcome significant challenges, or who work to expand the field of astrophysics beyond its previous boundaries. Owing the COVID-19 pandemic, remote telecommuting may be allowed or required until on-campus activities at UCSC resume.

ACADEMIC TITLE: Postdoctoral Scholar

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experiences. Minimum annual salary rates are made based on the individual’s Experience Level, which is determined by the number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. See current salary scale for Postdoctoral Titles at https://apo.ucsc.edu/compensation/salary-scales/index.html.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in Astrophysics, Astronomy, or Physics.

POSITION AVAILABLE: Immediately after selection, no later than September 1, 2020. Ph.D. must be in hand at time of the initial appointment.

MAXIMUM DURATION OF SERVICE IN A POSTDOCTORAL TITLE: Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time; the initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of reappointment for a total of three years. Reappointment will be contingent upon positive performance review and availability of funding. The total duration of an individual’s postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution. Under limited circumstances, an exception to this limit may be considered, not to exceed a sixth year.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: All documents and materials must be submitted as PDFs and should be forwarded to Brant Robertson ([email protected]). Applications must include a curriculum vitae with list of publications, a research statement that includes a brief summary of relevant experience and research interests, and a list of contact information for three or more references from whom letters may be requested. Please refer to Extragalactic Astrophysics Postdoctoral Scholar Position in all correspondence.
