Job Announcement Text:

The School of Physics and Astronomy and its Astronomy Instrumentation Group (AIG) seek a talented and highly-motivated academic with expertise in superconducting detector physics and technology. This position will strengthen the AIG’s core research and instrumentation development with an emphasis on kinetic inductance detector arrays and systems, and potentially other novel technologies, for applications in experimental astronomy and cosmology, and will also contribute to the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.

The Cardiff Astronomy Instrumentation Group has an outstanding record in developing instrumentation for ground-based and space-borne observatories and experiments in far infrared to millimetre wavelength astronomy and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) cosmology, as well as promoting applications of its technology in other scientific fields and in industry. It has advanced laboratories and facilities, and collaborates with leading institutes worldwide. This academic position will further enhance its strong programme in superconducting detector systems for the next generation of instruments.

You will have a PhD in Physics, Engineering or a closely-related subject area from a leading university programme, or equivalent industrial experience, and be capable of independent research and superconducting technology development. You will have an outstanding research track record demonstrated through publications in high quality academic journals. You will be an excellent communicator and teacher and have demonstrated the ability to teach effectively at University level.

Applications should include a cover letter, a CV, and supporting statements on research and teaching, demonstrating how the essential criteria are met.

The appointment is full-time and open ended.
