Job Description

Postdoc Position in Observational Solar Physics at KIS

 

Leibniz-Institute for Solar Physics (KIS), Freiburg, Germany, invites applications for a postdoc position in observational solar physics within the group Solar Telescopes to support scientific activities and operation of the German solar facilities at the Teide Observatory on Tenerife (OT), Spain.

KIS is a foundation of public law of the State of Baden-Württemberg and a member of the Leibniz Association. Its mission is to perform fundamental astrophysical research with an emphasis on solar physics. Current research foci are 1) dynamic solar atmosphere, 2) the Sun among stars, and 3) Instruments, Techniques and Data. KIS operates the German solar facilities at the Teide Observatory on Tenerife, including the 1.5m GREGOR and 0.7m VTT solar telescopes, and pursues a forefront instrument development program including solar adaptive optics, Fabry-Perot systems, high-precision polarimetry, etc. KIS participates in Solar Orbiter, Sunrise, and the DKI Solar Telescope (DKIST), for which one of the first instruments, the Visible Tunable Filter (VTF), is being constructed at KIS. We are looking for a scientist with an excellent record of post-doctoral research in observational solar physics with experience in project and data management. The position is structured with half-time dedicated to cutting-edge research in observational solar physics and half-time to supporting the OT operation. At the OT, responsibilities include:

  • organizing the telescopes’ scientific operation including scheduling observations, communicating with observers, supporting organization of the technical maintenance,
  • supporting the integration, verification and optical alignment of the telescopes and scientific instrumentations and monitoring the processing of scientific data,
  • communicating with the partner institutes and external organisations, public outreach
  • maintaining documentation and updating websites related to OT,
  • frequent travels to Tenerife.

Knowledge of Spanish and / or German is beneficial.

As default, the position is located in Freiburg, Germany, but can also be transferred to Tenerife. The appointment will be for a term of 2 years according to German legislation. The salary and benefits are according to the rules for government employees of the State of Baden-Württemberg at the E13 TV-L level. An extension for one year or for a tenure-track position is possible, subject to an excellent performance and successful review.
