Job Announcement Text:

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position at the Department of Astronomy/Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona.  The successful candidate will work with Professor David Sand on one or more projects centered on time domain astrophysics. The main project for the researcher will focus on gravitational wave follow-up science and infrastructure building for the upcoming O4 run of the advanced gravitational wave detectors under the auspices of the SAGUARO program (Searches After Gravitational waves Using Arizona's Observatories). Other opportunities include the sub-day cadence supernova search DLT40, and a newly upgraded wide-field imager on the
Kitt Peak 2.3-m Bok telescope, primed for new time domain programs.

The successful candidate will be encouraged to work with other Steward Observatory scientists, including members of the Arizona Transient Exploration and Characterization (AzTEC) team, led by Professor Nathan Smith.

Observational facilities at Steward include the 2x8.4m Large Binocular Telescope, the 6.5m MMT, the twin 6.5m Magellan telescopes, and an assortment of 1-2m class telescopes.  Postdocs can apply for time on any Steward facility directly as PI, and will be encouraged to do so. Steward is also immersed in one of the richest astronomical research environments in the world.

The position is for 2 years, renewable for a third year. Candidates must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or a related field before the commencement of the position in Summer or Fall 2022. Experience in time domain astrophysics, software development and/or instrumentation is a plus.  The appointment may be started earlier if mutually agreed. To apply, submit a UA Talent application https://talent.arizona.edu req#7921, and include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and a statement of research interests.  Please arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to [email protected]

Applicants should apply by January 15, 2022.

Included Benefits:

Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance; paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; access to UA recreation and cultural activities; and more!
