The Institute of Physics and Astronomy of Universidad de Valparaíso (UV) and the Institute of Physics of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV) invite applications for a joint postdoctoral position in extragalactic astronomy. The successful applicant will work with members of the Valparaiso Extragalactic Astronomy group (VEGA) on data science driven projects in any of the following areas: galaxy evolution, galaxy environment and large-scale structure, AGN and/or Cosmology. The postdoc will ideally work on the 4MOST CHANCES Survey (if approved), and/or data from SDSS-V, S-PLUS, Simons or preparation for LSST, depending on interests. We encourage the candidates to look at the specific science interests of the team on the VEGA website and/or contact us. A fraction of time will be available for independent research, and external collaborations are encouraged.
We seek a highly qualified and motivated postdoc with a PhD in Astronomy or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in extragalactic astronomy, and expertise in data science, astrostatistics, machine learning, and galaxy evolution. The position, funded by ESO-Chile joint committee, will be for two years, with possibility of extension though external grants (e.g. FONDECYT, if applicable).
While working in Valparaíso, the postdoc will qualify as members of the Chilean community with privileged access to 10% of the time on all astronomical observatories in Chile, including ESO/Paranal, Gemini-South, Magellan, CTIO, ALMA and APEX, as well as guaranteed access to SDSS-V data. The salary is the standard scale for postdocs in Chile (20.000.000 CLP/year before taxes) with additional 2.500.000 CLP/year for travel and/or other expenses.
Our team seeks to balance its gender and other minority presence. Applicants requiring part time employment to share time with caring responsibilities are also encouraged. Flexible working hours, and partial work-at-home or tele-commuting are also open to discussion.
Applicants should send a CV, a list of publications, a research statement (2 pages), and contact information for 2 reference letters. Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact María Argudo Fernandez ([email protected]) and/or Yara Jaffé ([email protected]) for additional information.
Applications will get full consideration until 30th of March 2021 but later applications may be considered until the position is filled.
