Job Description

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Fellow position at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) working with Dr. Laurie Rousseau-Nepton, the PI of the Star formation, Ionized Gas and Nebular Abundances Legacy Survey (SIGNALS). Funded by Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) NSF (Proposal 2109124), this position is a two year appointment focusing on data analysis and science publications related to the SIGNALS survey (conducted from Oct 2018 to July 2022).

Located on Maunakea, Hawai'i, the 3.6m CFHT is a world leader in wide-field imaging and high-resolution spectroscopy.  With the instrument SITELLE, an optical Fourier Transform Imaging Spectrograph, CFHT plays an important role in the study of emission line objects in the nearby universe. The SIGNALS survey is a large program at CFHT, with 60 nights of observing time over 4 years using SITELLE capabilities to observe 40 nearby-star-forming galaxies and study with unprecedented details the HII regions and their environment at a mean angular resolution of 20 parsec and a spectral resolution ranging from 1000 to 5000 in the Visible. More information on the survey can be found here: SIGNALS: Survey Description

What You Will Do:

  • Collaborate with the SIGNALS’ project members at CFHT and internationally to develop analysis tools, conduct research, and publish results.
  • Participate in organizing a workshop on data reduction and astronomical research for high school students participating in the Maunakea Scholars program.
  • Use the opportunity of working at CFHT to develop expertise in observations, instrumentation and/or software development as desired by the candidate.

What is Required:

  • Applicants must have recently received a Ph.D. in Physics or Astronomy.
  • Experience with data handling and analysis.
  • Coding skills in python.
  • Demonstration of problem-solving skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare research results for publication and presentation at seminars and scientific meetings.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience studying HII regions and/or extragalactic astronomy.
  • Experience studying star-formation rate in galaxies, photoionization modeling, galaxy/HII regions dynamics, etc.
  • Experience with the analysis of Integral Field Spectroscopy and/or standard Spectroscopy.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.

 Additional Information:

  • This is a full-time, two-year postdoctoral appointment.
  • Starting date of the appointment is expected as early as April 1, 2022 and ideally no later than August 1, 2022.
