Job Description

We are excited to announce multiple postdoctoral positions in topics related to astrophysics, cosmology, and machine learning at Ciela Institute (https://ciela.science), affiliated with the University of Montreal and Mila. The institute is a cross-disciplinary collaboration between experts in machine learning and astrophysics with the goal of contributing to major breakthrough discoveries in astrophysics by developing novel data analysis methods with machine learning. The institute is a major node of the Simons Collaboration on “Learning the Universe” and also of the FutureLens initiative, funded by the Simons and the Schmidt Futures foundations, respectively. The positions are for 3-year terms, with the possibility of longer-term extensions.

We are seeking candidates who will pursue research in one or more of the following themes:

Strong gravitational lensing: Experience in lensing data analysis and machine learning is highly valued. The successful candidates will be given the opportunity to join the FuturesLens initiative, the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC), and the Euclid Consortium and have access to data from these large surveys.

Cosmology (data analysis and machine learning): Expertise in inference methods, LSS, cosmological simulations, and CMB are highly valued. The candidate will be given the opportunity to join the Simons Collaboration in Learning the Universe (https://www.learning-the-universe.org).

Machine learning: Representation learning, Bayesian inference, generative modeling, diffusion and score-based modeling, high-dimensional inference, computer vision, graphical models, reinforcement learning.

The successful candidates will join Mila (https://mila.quebec/), the world’s largest academic research center in machine learning, which rallies 1,000 researchers specializing in this field and will have ample opportunities for exchange with researchers from our partner institutions (Trottier Space Institute at McGill and Trottier Institute for Research on Exoplanets). The candidates will work in close collaboration with local members, including Prof. Yashar Hezaveh, Prof. Laurence Perreault Levasseur, Prof. Yoshua Bengio, Prof. Siamak Ravanbakhsh, Prof. Pierre-Luc Bacon, Prof. Julie Hlavacek-Larrondo, Prof. Adrian Liu, and several postdoctoral fellows and graduate students in related research areas. We also have strong ties and exchange programs with the Center for Computational Astrophysics at the Flatiron Institute, and the Perimeter Institute, allowing opportunities for close collaborations with members of these centers and long-term visits. All candidates are also strongly encouraged to pursue independent research in broader topics related to machine learning and astrophysical data analysis.

To express interest, applicants should submit 1) a CV, 2) a detailed publication list, and 3) a statement of research through AcademicJobsOnline (https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/25845) before Nov 7th. Applicants should also arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent through AcademicJobsOnline.

Ciela Institute, Mila, and the University of Montreal are committed to diversity and equity within the community. We welcome applications from women, aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, ethnic minorities, persons of all sexual orientation or gender identity, visible minorities, and others who may contribute to diversification.
