The American Astronomical Society (AAS) (https://aas.org), established in 1899, is a major international organization of professional astronomers, astronomy educators, and amateur astronomers. AAS Publishing is hiring an Editorial Assistant to join the publishing team who assist with the peer review for The Astronomical Journal, The Astrophysical Journal, The Astrophysical Journal Letters, The Astrophysical Journal Supplements, The Bulletin of the AAS, The Planetary Science Journal, and Research Notes of the AAS. As with all AAS Publishing positions, this position is remote.

You will join a team dedicated to ensuring the finest possible customer service for authors submitting their journal articles to AAS publications.

Responsibilities include:

As a member of the AAS Publishing Team you will assist the AAS Editorial Operations Manager, AAS scientific editors, and AAS publishing staff during the manuscript submission and peer review process.

Will be trained in general AAS submission requirements, AAS editorial procedures and policy, and AAS peer review deadlines.

Assists AAS Editorial Operations Manager in monitoring general workflow of AAS submissions involving a geographically distributed editorial team of AAS Editor-in-Chief, Lead Editors, Scientific Editors, and Data Editors

Assists authors and referees with questions about submission requirements, metadata capture, and file integrity.

As directed by the AAS Editorial Operations Manager, communicates with authors submitting articles for publication, both on an expedited and standard basis.

Assists the AAS Editorial Operations Manager in developing new configuration or enhancements for the web-based peer review system and in evaluating peer review software and tools.

Covers for other editorial staff who may be temporarily absent (for example, sickness or vacation).

Qualifications:

Education: BS/BA required, preferably with three years related experience.

Requires excellent communications, analytical, and organizational skills. Requires excellent computer skills, Microsoft Word and Excel

Related Work Experience: Demonstrated ability to acquire skills necessary to manage a variety of tasks related to journal manuscript submissions, review, and publication required.

Additional Information: Ability to take direction and meet agreed upon work priorities. Ability to exercise administrative judgment and assume responsibility for decisions. Attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines. Possess good interpersonal skills with enthusiasm for working with people. Ability to work in a team. Ability to interact professionally with the international editorial team, authors, and referees of the premier research journals of the AAS.
