Job Description

Tenure-track Assistant Professor – Astronomy
Department of Physics and Astronomy
University of Missouri-Kansas City

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Missouri – Kansas City seeks to fill a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor, starting in September 2019. We are particularly interested in applicants with theoretical expertise in galaxy formation and evolution to complement existing strengths in observational studies of galaxies and galaxy clusters. However, we welcome applications from all observers and theorists whose research interests connect with and broaden those of the current faculty members. UMKC faculty engage in research, teaching, and service. Position responsibilities include developing a vigorous program of original, externally funded research in astrophysics, mentoring of PhD students, and teaching astronomy and physics courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Applicants should have a PhD in astronomy or a closely related field and a strong record of published research. We especially encourage applications from candidates who will contribute, through their research, teaching, and service, to the diversity and excellence of UMKC and the broader STEM community.

Kansas City is a vibrant, diverse, and progressive city.  Consistently named one of America’s best cities, it combines a thriving economy with a community of excellent schools, cultural amenities (world class symphony, art museums, the KC Jazz scene and championship professional sports teams), acclaimed dining (particularly our BBQ) and affordable living. Most importantly, it’s a community with a heart – friendly, easy-going, and forward-thinking – and UMKC is the university at the center of it all.

To apply, please combine all application materials (cover letter, curriculum vitae including full publication record, research plan, statement of teaching experience and interests, and contact information for three references) into one PDF or Microsoft Word document with a maximum size of 11MB, and upload online at https://info.umkc.edu/hr/careers/academic-positions (Job ID: 28511) as your resume attachment. Limit the document name to 50 characters and do not include any special characters (e.g. \, $, &, %, etc). Please also arrange for three official letters of reference to be sent to Chair, Search Committee via e-mail to [email protected].
