The Department of Physics & Astronomy at Stonehill College invites applicants for a tenure track assistant professor position, starting in the Fall of 2020.
We are interested in applicants with background in astrophysics, astronomy, cosmology, geophysics or, more generally, geosciences. We might also consider a particle physicist or a plasma physicist with ongoing long-term involvement in outside projects which may be potentially open to our students. Our strong preference is for applicants with a experimental and/or observational background, plus a good knowledge of computational methods and, ideally, computer simulations of physical systems. Our facilities include a femtosecond laser lab as well as two new labs with newly acquired optics/photonics equipment, which could be used for research in astrophysics and planetary science.
The applicant will join a department of three full-time tenured and tenure track faculty. We have a wide range of disciplinary expertise, ranging from astrophysics, to geophysics, quantum field theory, theoretical and experimental optics and engineering photonics. We are a department of individualists, who value independence and self-reliance, but also informal social interaction, teamwork and friendship. Each one of us has contributed to the growth of the department, by introducing new programs, new courses and new ways of teaching. We are looking for an energetic person who can bring their contribution to the further academic growth of our department, a person of ideas who is able to work with others for common goals.
The applicant should have a very strong interest in teaching, a record of published research and a clear ongoing program of research. Typically, the teaching load in our department is 9-11 teaching credits per semester; lecture-only courses count for 3 credits and courses which include a lab component count for 5 credits. The applicant will also be committed to involving students in some of their research, and helping them apply to good internships, including our own S.U.R.E. Program. We have an astronomical observatory, and the basic infrastructure needed to build a solar observatory. The applicant will contribute to the use and further development of these facilities.
