Franklin & Marshall College invites applications for a tenure-track position in the Department of Physics and Astronomy beginning Fall 2020 at the rank of assistant professor or instructor depending on qualifications. Applicants should possess or be close to completing a doctorate degree. We are interested in candidates whose research area is broadly related to astrophysics and astronomy, who can teach courses in our major and our general education curriculum (Connections), and who will strengthen our commitment to providing an inclusive learning and work environment.
Our Physics and Astronomy department hosts eight full-time faculty and graduates 10-15 undergraduate physics and astrophysics majors per year, including pre-engineering students.
Franklin & Marshall College (F&M) is a research-intensive liberal arts college with an outstanding record of supporting undergraduate involvement in scientific research. Our historic residential campus is located in Lancaster, PA, a vibrant and culturally diverse city located about an hour away from Philadelphia and Baltimore by car or train.

A successful teaching statement will describe how you have addressed or would address the challenge of including students with diverse backgrounds and goals, the use of varied pedagogies, and your successes and failures as a teacher. Please address how your understanding and practice of teaching and learning have developed and will continue to develop, including concrete examples.
A successful research statement will describe how you will include undergraduates in your research in a meaningful way and how you will contribute significantly to your field at an undergraduate institution. The college provides financial research support including startup funding and our Hackman Summer Scholar program.
The person selected for this tenure-track position may also be considered for a supplemental appointment as a Franklin & Marshall High Impact Emerging Scholar. These are scholars who possess outstanding promise for inspiring and supporting the educational development of underrepresented minority students in a higher educational setting such as F&M. Selected finalists who meet these additional qualifications, in addition to those outlined by this ad, may be nominated by the department as F&M (Mellon) High Impact Emerging Scholar. If selected as a M/HIES, the person will receive a two-year appointment (additional to the tenure-track appointment) that begins as soon as the person joins the campus on the tenure-track. The M/HIES program supports the acceleration of one’s research trajectory with a significantly reduced teaching load for two years along with supportive mentoring to advance the scholar’s research and professional development.
