Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position at Leiden Observatory to work on the survey selection function for the Gaia mission. The research will be done as part of the GaiaUnlimited project, which is funded from the European Unions Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101004110. The aim is to research, develop, and implement the Gaia survey selection function, as well selection functions for Gaia combined with other surveys. This will result in publicly available data products and open source code to apply the selection functions to analyses of the Gaia data. The selection functions will be applied during the project to the modelling of the binary population in the Gaia catalogue, with the freedom to work also on other astrophysical problems.
The successful candidate will work under supervision of Anthony Brown. The work will be carried out in collaboration with the partners in GaiaUnlimited, and will be embedded within the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in astronomy, physics, computer science, or mathematics by the starting date. The candidate should have a strong background in data analysis. Experience with constructing or applying survey selection functions will be an advantage.
The appointment is for a period of three years and comes with full benefits and a competitive salary. The anticipated start date of the appointment is no later than June 30 2021.
