Job Description

The Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics (ITA), University of Oslo invites applicants to a position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow in computational astrophysics. The appointment is a fulltime position and is for a period of four years (25% of which is devoted to required duties, usually teaching activities). Availability for an early starting date (Sping 2023) is preferred, but not required. 

Job description: 

The position is funded by the European Commission and the Research Council of Norway through the EuroHPC Centre of Excellence “Scalable Parallel and Distributed Astrophysics Code for Exascale (SPACE)”.

The successful candidate will collaborate with Dr. Sijing Shen and other scientific and industrial partners in the Consortium to work on co-designing and improving the scalability of widely-used Astrophysical and Cosmology codes and preparing them for the next generation exascale systems. Meanwhile, the candidate is encouraged to carry out independent research and collaborate with Dr. Shen and others in the simulation group at ITA on various topics including galaxy formation simulations, cosmic magnetic fields, modelling of the circumgalactic medium, radiative and mechanical feedback processes and galactic chemical evolution. 

We are seeking a candidate with a strong background in numerical galaxy formation and/or high-performance computing. In selection, the academic quality and promise of the candidates will be of primary importance.

Qualification requirements: 

  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in astrophysics, physics or a related field. 
  • Candidates with one or more of the following expertise are strongly encouraged to apply: numerical (magneto)hydrodynamics; high performance computing; simulations of galaxy formation and evolution; processing of large simulation datasets and catalogues; machine learning techniques. 
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English;

Compensation Range
$52,800USD to $60,776USD
