Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Observational Astrophysics

The Department of Physics at the University of Bath is seeking to appoint a Lecturer with an established research profile in observational astrophysics in one or more fields of time domain, galaxy formation and evolution, high energy and black hole astrophysics. The appointee will become a member of the Bath Astrophysics Group (http://www.bath.ac.uk/physics/research/astrophysics/), which is a new and growing research group with an international reputation in Galactic and extragalactic astrophysics, including the study of black hole driven systems and their environments within the wider context of stellar and galactic evolution and cosmology. Group members have privileged access to the University’s high performance computer cluster (http://www.bath.ac.uk/bucs/services/hpc/), are active in numerous international, national and local science collaborations, e.g. including major astronomical facilities such as LSST, CTA, VLT-KMOS, NASA-WISE, ESA-GAIA and ESA-XIPE, and are developing capabilities for multi-messenger astronomy  and astrostatistics in the era of time-domain science and gravitational-wave astronomy.

The successful candidate will establish a well-funded independent research programme that complements and enhances existing activities in the group and around the university, for instance by forming links to the Centre for Photonics and Photonic Materials, the Bath Institute for Mathematical Innovation and the Department of Computer Science. The appointee will also contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision and administrative duties within the Department.

Physics at the University of Bath is a research-led Department that was ranked 13th among UK Physics Departments in the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) assessment exercise. Both the Department and the University are committed to providing a supportive and inclusive working environment. We are working to improve the present gender balance within the Department, and particularly welcome applications from women, who are currently under-represented in academic posts.

Applicants should upload statements describing their proposed research activities - including a description of synergies with the Bath Astrophysics Group interests - and approach to undergraduate teaching with their application (maximum 2 pages each), as well as Curriculum Vitae with list of publications and the names of at least two referees.

For general discussion of the role, please contact Professor Carole Mundell (Head of Department) on +44 1225 385 579 or email [email protected]
