The Senior Telescope Facilities Engineer reports to the TMT Telescope Structures Group Leader and is responsible for technical leadership of the telescope utilities services (TUS) design and installation subcontracts, and for supporting the design, fabrication and installation of the telescope structure and its associated electromechanical systems. The telescope structure and associated electromechanical systems will be supplied to TMT by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) through a design-build contract placed with a Japanese industrial company. The telescope utilities services (TUS) that supply power, lighting, communications, coolant and compressed air to telescope mounted subsystems is designed by a U. S. subcontractor and installed by a contractor at the observatory site.
The primary work location for the Senior Telescope Facilities Engineer will initially be at the TMT Project office in Pasadena, CA, and a significant amount of international and domestic travel will be required. The work location will shift to the observatory site after a few years.
The Senior Telescope Facilities Engineer will work as part of the team responsible for guiding and evaluating the final design, fabrication, trial assembly, transport, erection and testing of the telescope structure, its electromechanical and controls subsystems and utilities distribution systems by the contractors. Job duties will include:
- Overseeing the technical work and assisting the Work Package Manager in managing work scope, cost and progress by the contractors.
- Developing and ensuring conformance to requirements, specifications and interfaces.
- Working with systems engineers, contractors and other TMT project elements on system engineering products such as interface control documents, design analysis, FMECA, hazard analysis, management of technical resources, review support, etc.
- Working with the TMT international partner organizations in Japan, Canada, China, India and the United States.
- Facilitating communications and work flow between the Project Office, partner institutions and contractors to develop and ensure conformance to interfaces.
- Developing and executing risk mitigation plans and safety plans.
Specifically, the Senior Telescope Facilities Engineer will be responsible for:
- Technical leadership of the TUS work.
- Ensuring the contractors meet the design, installation, performance and North American building code requirements for the TUS, telescope structure and its associated electromechanical and controls systems.
- Assisting the WP manager in developing work plans, schedules and budgets for the TUS and purchased subsystems and engineering services.
- Ensuring the contractors provide the deliverables on schedule and within allocated budget.
- Independent verification of contractor designs and analyses as required
- Presenting status reports and presentations to project management.
- Assisting in organizing and conducting review meetings, including the final design review, prefabrication review, pre ship review, etc., for the TUS, telescope structure and its subsystems.
- Working with the TMT Compliance Officer to assure that safety and environmental standards and regulations are met.
- Developing CAD models, oneline diagrams, interface drawings and presentations used to communicate with the contractors and project staff
- Representing TMT through involvement with professional organizations and presentations to international conferences.
The Senior Telescope Facilities Engineer will also support the systems engineering of the telescope structure and its subsystems, and work with the project Systems Engineering, ES&H and QA groups, the TUS contractor and NAOJ to maintain and update:
- Configuration control of the TUS and telescope structure design
- Formal release of project drawings and documentation to support the design and development process
- Top-down and bottom-up error budgets
- Quality Assurance Plan
- Environmental, Health and Safety Plan
- Integration and verification plans
- A bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical or other closely related engineering discipline is required; an advanced degree in engineering is highly preferred.
- 8 years’ experience in performing the design, fabrication, installation, integration, operations and maintenance of facilities with expansive electrical, lighting, fluid and gas distribution systems including refrigerant, chilled water, cryogen and high pressure piping applications.
- Experience in performing the design, fabrication, programming, installation and commissioning of industrial control systems utilizing PLCs, VFDs, DC and AC motors.
- Experience in routing layout, installation and commissioning of electrical power, grounding, controls signal and data cables with compliance to design requirements and North American building codes.
- Experience formulating and overseeing subcontracts performing design, analyses, fabrication and testing work in a cost constrained environment.
- Experience in developing and executing work plans, and maintaining schedule and budget targets for purchased subsystems and engineering services.
- Experience developing and updating systems requirements and interface control documents.
- CAD experience in creating and updating oneline diagrams and 3D models; familiarity with SolidWorks is preferred.

- Vibration analysis and vibration mitigation systems
- Knowledge of optical surveying techniques, i.e., photogrammetry, laser tracker measurement, etc.
- Experience working on large projects
- Experience working on international projects
- Fluency in Japanese would be an asset
