The Department of Physics & Astronomy at Minnesota State University, Mankato has an opening for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Astronomy beginning in August 2018.  Minnesota State, Mankato is a Comprehensive university with a student body of roughly 14,000.  The Department of Physics & Astronomy offers BS and MS degrees in Physics and Physics Teaching.  We also offer a minor in Astronomy.  We operate two observatories on campus.  Standeford Observatory has a collection of 10" to 12" telescopes, mainly used for eyepiece observing by undergraduate students and the general public.  Andreas Observatory has an 0.5m Cassegrain telescope and an 0.25m wide-field Baker Ritchey-Chretien telescope that are used for student and faculty research and upper-level teaching. We have a number of CCD cameras and a Spectrograph for use at Andreas Observatory.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate astronomy courses including observing courses.  A typical standard teaching load is 24 credits per year (3 to 4 courses per semester).  He or she will also Conduct research and scholarly activity and engage students in that activity, advise and mentor students and contribute to student growth and participate in service to the department, college, university and community.

Current research activities in astronomy or astrophysics

Postdoctoral research experience or evidence of established research in astronomy or astrophysics.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Demonstrated experience and success teaching astronomy.

Interest and experience using small telescopes for education and public outreach.

Ability to continue research activity on campus, involving MSU students.

Superior communication skills including oral and written presentations.

Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.
