Job Description

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Iowa State University (ISU) seeks candidates for faculty positions at a junior level for a cluster of positions in theoretical physics and astrophysics. We anticipate one or more hires in the fields of astrophysics, condensed matter, or nuclear theory, and are seeking candidates at the forefront of their respective fields who can envision fruitful connections and collaborations with theoretical efforts in other fields. Through this cluster of hires, we seek a balanced theoretical effort that focuses on the frontiers shared by multiple sub-disciplines. The goal is to enhance the research efforts individually within the astrophysics, condensed matter and nuclear theory groups, while fostering synergies and promoting collaborations between different research areas. The synergies envisioned could include shared challenges in analytical, computational or big data methods, and broad-based physical simulation techniques. It could also include shared theoretical frameworks such as, but not limited to, fundamental symmetries, phase transitions, topology, hydrodynamic theory, strongly interacting systems, nucleosynthesis, entanglement, or emergent phenomena. Qualified applicants must have a PhD in physics, astronomy, or a closely related discipline, a strong research program and enthusiasm for teaching undergraduate and graduate students.

Further information about the physical sciences at ISU can be found at http://www.physastro.iastate.edu and http://www.ameslab.gov/dmse. Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and statement regarding teaching philosophy and specific teaching interests as they relate to this position. A summary of prior research and concise description of future research plans, including how the planned research could create or exploit synergies in the theory cluster (no more than five pages total) is also required. Applications, including three letters of recommendation, must be submitted online at https://www.iastatejobs.com/postings/36396 by December 3, 2018 to guarantee full consideration.

ISU is an EO/AA employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or protected Vet status.
