Job Description

We invite applicants for a post-doctoral fellowship in exoplanet direct imaging with Dr Thayne Currie in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at The University of Texas-San Antonio (UTSA).

The successful applicant will help develop a new high-contrast imaging laboratory at UTSA, conduct laboratory experiments, and collaborate with scientists at the Subaru Telescope and the Southwest Research Institute.

They will have the opportunity to pursue high contrast imaging-focused projects of their choosing. Possibilities include co-leading the exoplanet direct imaging science program for the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics Project, wavefront control experiments on the SCExAO bench and/or at UTSA, and new high-contrast imaging instrumentation at Subaru.

Required qualifications: A PhD in astronomy, mechanical/electrical engineering, optical sciences, physics, or a related field by the start of appointment. Preferred qualifications: 1) experience working on, aligning, and designing an optical bench for astronomy, 2) familiarity with infrared detectors and adaptive optics, and 3) a demonstrated publication record on high-contrast imaging.

The appointment is for 2 years -- with the possibility of a one-year extension contingent upon performance and funding – with benefits and research support. The anticipated start date is Fall 2023.

To apply, please send an email to [email protected] with the title “Exoplanet Postdoctoral Fellowship Position” and include the following: 1) a CV+publications list, 2) a 2-page narrative describing research interests and technical qualifications, and 3) the names and email addresses for 3 references.

Application submitted by November 28, 2022 will be guaranteed full consideration.
