Job Announcement Text:

The Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) is a world-leading institute in space- and ground-based experimental astrophysics, with leading roles in a number of large astronomical projects. The High-Energy group, led by Prof. K. Nandra, carries out major space hardware programs, including the development of X-ray detectors and X-ray optics.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the field of diffuse X-ray emission through the analysis and interpretation of eROSITA data.

The successful applicant is expected to be the backbone of the “Hot Milk” project funded by the European Research Council and aimed at characterising the hot phase of the Milky Way (

The work, performed under the supervision of Dr. Gabriele Ponti, will revolve around the analysis of eROSITA X-ray data, focussing both on the outflow from the Milky Way centre, by mapping the evolution of the physical parameters of the outflow and its impact on the Galaxy itself, as well as on the investigation of the Galactic corona and its relations to the other components of the Milky Way and to galaxy evolution. Additionally, the properties of the hot phase of the Milky Way will be compared with the emission at other wavelengths.

The appointment will be for 2 years, with the possibility of extension. The Hot Milk project will run for a total of five years. Funding for travel, computing and publication expenses will be provided dependent on availability.

The salary and social benefits are based on the German TVöD scale for public employees, depending on experience.

Applicants should submit their documents (in PDF form) online ( ) including a CV, a list of publications, a brief (~1 page) description or research interests by April 20, 2020. Two referees should be identified, who can provide letters of recommendation upon request.

Prospective applicants can contact Dr. Michael Freyberg (

For information about the project, please contact Dr. Gabriele Ponti (

Two further postdoc positions related to this project will be available at the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF) - Osservatorio Astronomico di Brera. The official call for applications can be found at the following web page:
