STScI is looking for a Science Instrument Calibration Software Team Manager to provide leadership, supervision, technical direction, and mentorship of a diverse team of software engineers, database engineers, test engineers, and astronomers.
STScI is the science operations center for several NASA missions. The DMD is responsible for a multi-petabyte astronomical data archive that maintains the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), Kepler, GALEX, and TESS mission data. It will maintain mission data for the future James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), launching in 2021 and Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (Roman), launching in the mid-2020s. Science Instrument Calibration Software Team Manager Job Responsibilities:
You will lead the Science Instrument Calibration Software team that is responsible for the development, operational maintenance, and user support of calibration software for the Hubble, James Webb, and Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescopes. This software removes detector and instrumental effects, allowing the data to be ready for scientific analysis, and enabling scientists in the astronomy community to extract maximal science from the observations taken by these missions.
- Communicate effectively at the interface between astronomy and software engineering
- Manage a team of 13 software engineers and astronomers working in an agile environment
- Provide project management including coordination, detail planning, direction, and reporting
- Provide functional management including recruitment, coaching, mentorship, and training
- Establish goals and track expected results to closure
- Develop, maintain, and support continuous improvement activities
- Coordinate with other groups both within and outside STScI
- Analyze technology and resource needs to plan and assess the feasibility of projects
- Participate in the development of standards and procedures for the engineering and technical work performed at STScI and implement them within the branch
Qualifications and the Job Requirements
BA in Astronomy, Computer Science, Engineering, or Physics or a related technical or science field. Master's Degree in Computer Science, Astronomy, or related field preferred.
- Demonstrated progressive technical, management, and leadership experience
- Demonstrated very effective communication skills
- Demonstrated experience managing staff developing and supporting a large complex system
- Software engineering experience, including scientific programming with Python
- Experience working within an environment that supports a science community
- Good working knowledge of code versioning tools such as git
- Demonstrated project management experience
- This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements.
Beneficial skills:
- Experience with Python.
- Familiarity with Astropy and Python scientific libraries.
- Experience with agile techniques.
- Experience with large data sets and databases.
- Experience with Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD)
