The Department of Astronomy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
invites applications from Ph.D. scientists for postdoctoral position working on
survey science with the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) The position is
full-time for 3 years and offers a competitive salary, benefits, and research
funds. The proposed starting date is August 3, 2020, although this is flexible.
We encourage candidates with broad interests in survey science and cosmology.
The researcher will work with Prof. Gautham Narayan and other scientists at
the University of Illinois and NCSA. Potential projects include (but are not
limited to) inference of morphology, SEDs and photometric redshifts using
existing multiwavelength wide-field surveys, using machine learning to discover
unusual and exotic transients within the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST)
alert stream, modeling the electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave
sources, and constraining the nature of dark energy with photometric samples of
The selected candidate will be part of the new Center for Astrophysical Surveys
(CAPS) and will have access to facilities and data at the National Center for
Supercomputing Applications. NCSA is a hub of transdisciplinary research and
digital scholarship where University of Illinois faculty, staff, and students,
and collaborators from around the globe, unite to address research grand
challenges for the benefit of science and society. Existing research programs
at Illinois include the Dark Energy Survey (DES), LSST, SDSS-V, WFIRST, CMB-S4,
and the South Pole Telescope (SPT), along with the development of future
ground-based, balloon, and satellite projects. NCSA leads data management and
processing for the DES project with support from the National Science
Foundation, is a partner in the construction and commissioning of LSST and,
will be the global central hub for LSST processing, archiving, and serving
terabytes of data that will be collected each night of the decade-long survey.
Applicants are requested to submit a:
- Cover Letter describing your interest in LSST and this position
- Curriculum vitae
- Summary of previous and current research (2-3 pages)
- Names and contact information for three references
The deadline for applications is December 31, 2019 for full consideration.
Please send all materials as a single file in pdf format to Prof. Gautham
Narayan (email@example.com), with “LSST Survey Science Postdoc” in the subject
