Job Description

The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) is a major research center for astrophysics in Germany. Scientists at AIP work on a variety of astrophysical topics covering the full range from solar physics to cosmology. Key aspects are cosmic magnetic fields and extragalactic astrophysics, supported by a large technology team on spectroscopy, robotics, and e-science. The AIP is located in the beautiful Potsdam/Babelsberg area, at the south-western border of the Berlin metropolitan area. It continues the tradition of the Astrophysical Observatory Potsdam and the Berlin Observatory (founded 1700) and has about 200 employees.

Applications are invited for a

Tenure-track researcher

who can strengthen our research in Galactic and extragalactic observational science, particularly our ability to exploit the science potential of the 4MOST facility (www.4most.eu). 4MOST is a wide-field, multi-object, optical spectroscopic survey facility being developed under AIP leadership for ESO’s 4m-class VISTA telescope that is scheduled to go into operation in the second half of 2023. Scientists with an excellent track record of high-quality research publications in their respective sub-field, as well as strong evidence of impact, leadership and external grant funding are encouraged to apply. In particular, researchers with a strong background in stellar spectroscopy, but also those within other areas of expertise overlapping with the 4MOST science case will be fully considered.

Applicants must have a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field. Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organizations in Germany and include employer contributions to medical and dental insurance, maternity leave, retirement benefits, and a subsidy for a job ticket. The appointment will be for an initial period of five years, with tenure based on a successful performance review. For exceptional candidates with commensurate qualifications a tenured appointment may be considered. The AIP offers an equal opportunity environment with a diverse and inclusive work culture. Applications from women and from members of other underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged. Preference will be given to people with disabilities with equal competence.

Application documents will be made available to a selection committee and to the committees and officers to be involved. Application documents will be kept at AIP until at least three months after completion of the appointment process.

To apply, please register at https://jobs.aip.de/rec104/ and follow the instructions to upload pdf-files of your curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a statement of past, current and future research, and contact information for at least three referees. Applications received before April 30, 2021, will receive full consideration. For further information, please contact [email protected].
