Job Summary
Job Description
Based at McDonald Observatory; required to reside on-site. Occasional travel to UT Austin. Weekend and night work based on needs. Provides supervision for West Texas staff (50 people) of 24/7 remote facility. Areas of management: admin, Astronomers' Lodge, observing support, physical plant, safety office. Leads remote observing programs. Interacts with researchers. Maintains relationship with HET Facility Manager, supports McDonald-HET cooperation.
Member of sr. management team to Director. Coordinates with tenant facilities to ensure that research operations run smoothly. Works with Director and development to host official visitors and potential donors. Works with asst. director for admin. to maintain operating policies and procedures. Establishes safety culture. Senior member for residential emergency efforts. Participates in local community, promoting the observatory. Supports observatory residential community.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in science or engineering. Five years of exec. level management experience of research group or similar organization. Supervisory, program development, budget preparation and financial management experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's or Doctoral Degree in astronomy or related technical discipline, more than five years’ experience in management of a research group or similar organization.
Driving Required
Requires class "C" operator's driver's license.
Salary Range
$110,000 + depending on qualifications
