Job Description

The Space Telescope Science Institute, located on the campus of Johns Hopkins University, is seeking a motivated, team-focused Education & Outreach Scientist for our Office of Public Outreach (OPO). This position will support the NASA’s Universe of Learning science education program, as well as contribute to public and community engagement activities for the Hubble Space Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope. The Education & Outreach Scientist will be a member of a multi-disciplinary team and work collaboratively with other OPO and STScI staff and external partners to incorporate NASA Astrophysics mission science, technology, and expertise into a range of education and outreach products, programs, and experiences. The individual acts as a liaison between OPO staff, STScI partners, and the science community and serves as a scientific expert and participant in product and program development.

The candidate may work in multiple areas of science education, outreach, and communications. These include: online content; multimedia and immersive experiences; exhibits and displays; STEM experiences for youth and adults; large-scale public events; professional learning experiences for educators; partnership building; engagement of audiences traditionally underserved/underrepresented in STEM; involvement of scientists in education and outreach. A Ph.D. in Astronomy, Physics, or closely related field is required, with two to three years postdoctoral experience and three to five years related experience in science education or outreach preferred. Strong teamwork, collaboration, verbal and written communication, and project management skills are essential, along with demonstrated creativity and problem-solving capabilities.
