Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Astrophysics / Cosmology

We are seeking an enthusiastic astrophysicist or cosmologist to join the astrophysics group and undertake research at UQ as part of the Australian Research Council Discovery Project: “A Space Odyssey: Exploring the Universe with Gravitational-Wave Sirens.”

This position is focused on using gravitational waves to produce exciting new cosmological measurements. The overall aim of the Discovery Project is to use upcoming data from LIGO and extragalactic surveys to produce new measurements of the expansion rate of our Universe and local large scale motions. The candidate will ideally have experience in using transients or spectroscopic galaxy surveys for cosmology, gravitational wave astronomy, or theoretical explorations relevant to these two fields.

The candidate will have access to resources for travel and equipment under the ARC Discovery Project as well as existing expertise in cosmology and astrophysics at UQ. As part of the ARC Discovery Project, they would have active collaborations with members of LIGO based at the Universities of California (Berkeley) and Chicago. Our group also has active collaborations with several large international surveys including DES, DESI, 4MOST/4HS, LSST, and WALLABY, as well as access to the ESO optical telescopes and Australian observing and computing facilities.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in undergraduate teaching, and to be involved in the wider organisation of the astrophysics group, including selection and co-supervision of PhD and honours students.

This is a full-time fixed-term position at Academic Level A or B for up to 2 years, plus a possible extension of up to 1 year based on level and funding availability (part-time options may be available). Base salary will be in the range of AUD$72,144 - $120,570 p.a. plus superannuation of up to 17%.
