Job Description

The Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg invites applications for a

Software-Engineering Position (m/f/d), Ref. 359

in the Department Galaxies and Cosmology. The successful applicant will develop and maintain a code for the analysis of astrophysical parameters of stars working in the group of Dr. Maria Bergemann.

Expertise in the development of codes for data analysis, statistics, intermediate / advanced knowledge of Fortran and/or Python are required. Experience with large databases, machine learning, and documentation would be an asset. We are especially looking for applicants who have a background in astronomical modelling and/or observations, and have a demonstrated ability of work in teams.

Your Tasks:

The goal is to maintain and further develop the existing stellar analysis codes for 4MOST and PLATO astronomical facilities.  The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and updating the software, testing / validating the codes on simulated and real astronomical data, regularly interacting with other members of the 4MOST and PLATO team, and supporting the group at MPIA with research activities based on the code.

Your Profile:

Applicants should have a Master Degree in astrophysics, physics, software engineering, mathematics or a closely related field.

The appointment will be for a period of two years. Funds for publications, travel and computer equipment will be provided. The preferred starting date is September 1, 2023 or after.
