Job Description

High Energy Astrophysicist Postdoctoral Researcher

Applications are now being accepted for a Postdoctoral Associate, funded through the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP) and the Center for Research and Exploration in Space Sciences & Technology II (CRESST II) in the Department of Astronomy, to work in the X-ray Astrophysics Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. The Postdoctoral Associate will work with Dr. Brian Williams on studies of supernovae and supernova remnants across multiple wavelengths. Candidates of all scientific backgrounds (observational, computational, and theoretical) will be considered. Dr. Williams has ample observational projects in need of analysis and publication, and the successful applicant will be encouraged to not only work with these new and archival data, but also to apply for new observational and/or funding proposals. The pursuit of independent projects and new avenues for research is highly encouraged. The Postdoctoral Associate will be encouraged to publish papers and present research at appropriate conferences, and will be financially supported in doing so.

Candidates for this position should have a Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, or Astrophysics, which must be obtained by the time of the start date, with prior experience in high energy astrophysics scientific research. We recognize that strength comes through diversity and actively seek and welcome candidates with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and identities. We encourage women and minority candidates to apply.

Funding is available for travel, computing equipment and publications, as well as moving expenses. The initial funding for this position will be for two years, with the possibility of extension depending on performance and funding.

TO APPLY: Applications received by June 17, 2019 will receive best consideration. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the position is filled. Required application documents include: Curriculum Vitae, list of publications, statement of research interests, and contact information for three references.
