Job Description

The National Institute for Astrophysics - Observatory of Astrophysics and Space Science (INAF-OAS) and the University of Bologna, Department of Physics and Astronomy (UniBO-DIFA) are advertising their first Joint postdoctoral fellowship for AGN research in Bologna (JAB fellowship).

INAF-OAS is one of the main Departments of INAF, the main infrastructure in Italy for research in Astrophysics, made by a network of 17 Departments spread across the country. UniBO-DIFA  is one Department of the Science School of UniBO, and one of the most scientifically productive Physics Departments of Italy, internationally well-known for its activities in a wide range of research fields.

Both institutes are located in the newly established Bologna Astrophysics campus, which also includes the INAF - Institute for Radio Astronomy hosting the Italian ALMA Regional Center, and the headquarters of the Cherenkov Telescope Array, all within walking distances and with shared facilities. This is the largest center for astrophysics in Italy, with a strong group at the forefront of European research in the field of galaxy formation, Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), and AGN-galaxy co-evolution, and one of the largest astrophysics communities worldwide.

Applications are invited for an independent fellowship position to work on one or more AGN-related themes, such as the physics of accretion onto Supermassive Black Holes (SMBHs), the coevolution between SMBHs and their host galaxies, the small-to-large scale AGN feedback, the environment, demographics and cosmic evolution of AGN, the search for the most distant and hidden SMBHs. The prospective candidate is expected to develop an original research program, mainly of observational type, in collaboration with personnel at INAF-OAS and UniBO-DIFA.

Applicants should have a PhD in Physics or Astronomy obtained before January 25th, 2019. The position is expected to start by July 2022 and is for two years in the first instance and renewable afterwards, depending on fund availability and performance review. The yearly gross salary is 34,000 Euros. Generous funding will be allocated for publications, computing and travel expenses.

The applicant should prepare a CV, publication list, brief research project and fill all the application forms following the instructions of the official Call: https://www.oas.inaf.it/en/opportunities/bando-191-2021-en/

All applications should be submitted via email to: [email protected] by January 25th, 2022 (see the Call application guidelines for details). Up to three reference letters should be e-mailed separately to [email protected] by the same deadline.

For inquiries, please contact any member of the search committee: Dr. Roberto Gilli (INAF-OAS; [email protected]), Prof. Marcella Brusa (UniBO-DIFA; [email protected]), Dr. Giorgio Lanzuisi (INAF-OAS; [email protected]).

INAF and UniBO are equal opportunity employers. Members of underrepresented or disadvantaged groups are encouraged to apply.
