Job Description

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Scholar to pursue experimental/observational cosmology research in the Cornell Physics Department. The successful applicant will collaborate with Professor Michael Niemack and other faculty on research related to cosmic microwave background (CMB) and sub-millimeter astrophysics measurements. Opportunities include developing and testing superconducting detector arrays, optical technologies, and analytical tools for the upcoming Simons Observatory (simonsobservatory.org) and CCAT-prime (www.ccatobservatory.org) projects as well as helping to acquire and analyze data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (act.princeton.edu) and other observatories.

We are now observing with Advanced ACTPol – a polarization-sensitive instrument on the 6 meter Atacama Cosmology Telescope, located at 17,000 feet elevation in northern Chile – which is measuring the CMB polarization across half the sky with unprecedented sensitivity on arcminute angular scales. We are cross-correlating these data with optical surveys to characterize galaxy clusters and probe cosmology. We are also playing significant roles in developing superconducting detector arrays, microwave optics, survey strategies, and astronomical instrumentation for the upcoming Simons Observatory and CCAT-prime projects, which are both scheduled to achieve first light in 2021. These will include the highest throughput (sub-)millimeter wavelength telescopes ever built and are candidate telescopes for the next generation CMB-S4 project. More information about our research is available at www.classe.cornell.edu/~mdn49. Other Cornell faculty collaborating on these projects include Nicholas Battaglia, Rachel Bean, Terry Herter, Dominik Riechers, and Gordon Stacey.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in observational cosmology/astrophysics, physics, applied physics, or a related field. Review of applications is ongoing until the position is filled.

Interested applicants should submit a curriculum vita with a publication list and a description of research interests and skills using Academic Jobs Online (https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/11452). In addition, applicants should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be submitted by the reference writers through the Academic Jobs Online website.
