Job Description

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the field of (extra-)galactic astronomy at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Ghent University. The successful candidate will work in the `DustOrigin’ group of Prof. Ilse De Looze. She/he will work on modelling the dust destruction efficiency of supernova shocks experienced by interstellar dust in a realistic 3D ISM structure through the use of high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations. In the long term, a full chemical and dust evolution model will be linked to these high-resolution simulations. Candidates with expertise in hydrodynamical simulations, interstellar dust and/or chemical evolution modelling are strongly encouraged to apply. Support for travel, funded by an ERC Starting Grant, will be available.

Ghent is located in the Flemish speaking part of Belgium, some 50 km north-west of Brussels. Ghent is renowned for its beautiful medieval town centre, its lively cultural and music scene, and its vibrant student life. Ghent University is an international, highly rated university with more than 40,000 students. The astronomy group's expanding research interests include supernovae, nearby galaxies, infrared astronomy, hydrodynamical simulations/radiative transfer, galaxy formation and evolution, high-redshift observations and observational cosmology.

Informal inquires are welcome ([email protected]) and applications sent by November 30, 2020 will be fully considered. Candidates must possess a PhD in Physics, Astrophysics, or a similar field. Applicants should submit their CV and a statement of research interests (up to 3 pages). The candidates should also arrange for three reference letters to be sent by November 30, 2020 to [email protected]. The starting date can be as early as January 1st 2021 and should be no later than October 1st 2021. The position is initially for 2 years, and renewable for 2 years.
