The Telescope Engineer will support the Telescope Coordinator in monitoring the activities to deliver (from design phase to the installation and commissioning on site) the CTAO Telescopes. The goal is to contribute to the orderly and timely design, production, delivery, and installation at the two sites (CTAO-North and CTAO-South) of the CTAO telescopes (telescope structures and Cherenkov cameras) by the In-Kind-Contribution (IKC) teams. The IKC teams are composed by engineering and scientific personnel working in various scientific institutes of participating countries, and organized in three consortia, each one responsible for the delivery of a specific telescope type.

Your key responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the definition of product specifications (telescope structures and Cherenkov cameras), to the preparation of the IKC agreements between CTAO and the consortia, and to the preparation of interface documents between the telescopes and the rest of CTAO products (control system, infrastructure, civil works, power distribution, IT…)
  • Participation in and/or organization of product design and manufacturing reviews
  • Follow-up at technical and programmatic level of the work of the IKC teams delivering the telescopes.
  • Contribution on demand to specific system-design aspects of the CTAO observatory (e.g., control and safety of telescopes, handling and maintenance as well as other operational aspects)
  • Supervising and Monitoring acceptance testing activities at the two construction sites
  • Monitoring of detailed sub-system performance and technical budgets
  • Interaction with the telescope teams on matters linked to the erection and commissioning on site of the telescope and cameras, and support to the elaboration of AIV plans by the CTAO System Engineering groups
  • Application of Quality Management processes, mainly in the areas of production, integration and validation

Your qualifications and technical skills:

  • Engineering degree, preferably in Mechanical or electrical/electronic engineering and solid engineering background with several years of working experience, preferably in multidisciplinary projects
  • Nice-to-have: experience in one or some of the main disciplines related to Cherenkov or other (optical, IR, Radio) Telescopes (structures and fine mechanics, composites materials, control and electronics, optomechanics…)
  • Ability to work at system level, understanding of interfaces and interactions between subsystems.
  • Ability to write specifications, plans, minutes and reports
  • Ability to use CAD/CAM programs
  • Experience with industrial contracts, both at technical and Quality Assurance level
  • Understanding Configuration Control

Your social skills:

  • Excellent ability to work in an international environment, good interpersonal skills and strong sense of team spirit
  • Excellent English, spoken and written, to interact with colleagues, project partners and members of scientific institutions. Nice-to-have: knowledge of other languages beyond English
  • Must-have: standard MS office tools knowledge
  • Ability and willingness to travel within EU and the CTAO construction sites.

You’ll be reporting to: CTAO Telescope Coordinator

Your duty station: Bologna, Italy. Travel to the CTAO sites and locations of in-kind contributor teams in Europe is required.
