McDonald Observatory, The University of Texas Austin, invites applications for a Dark Skies Senior Outreach Program Coordinator. This position is located in the Davis Mountains; far West Texas (440 miles west of the UT Austin campus). McDonald Observatory is a research facility equipped with a wide range of instrumentation for imaging and spectroscopy in the optical and infrared spectra.
Dark Skies Senior Outreach Program Coordinator provides advanced program administration for the Dark Skies initiative. Coordinates and educates local communities, agencies, businesses, and individuals about the impacts of artificial lighting in the skies over McDonald Observatory. Evaluates, develops, and recommends effective lighting technologies and practices to maintain the dark and quiet skies for scientific research at the observatory.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in astronomy or a related field with a minimum of five years’ of a responsible level of program administration or program coordination in a science communications role with a major scientific institution; Master's degree in astronomy or a related with a minimum of three years' of a responsible level of program administration or program coordination in a science communications role with a major scientific institution. Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills. Ability to communicate well across a broad set of knowledge and experience levels. Excellent organizational skills. Ability to be adaptable, work independently, and as an integral member of a team. Excellent computer literacy skills. Demonstrable good judgment. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
