DESCRIPTION

The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a High-Performance Computing Scientist. Under the direction of Professor Brant Robertson, the High-Performance Computing Scientist will lead the scientific support and maintenance of our NSF-funded supercomputing facilities. UCSC has recently installed a state-of-the-art high performance computing (HPC) system to enable computational research in astrophysics, earth and planetary science, physics, chemistry, computer science, and related fields. The Project Scientist will help manage and set policies for the HPC system and support the user base in enabling their research on the system. The candidate will contribute to documentation and reporting, and continually identify and improve processes and workflows on the HPC system. The selected candidate will serve as an interface with UCSC Information Technology Services staff and collaborate with them in the support and maintenance of the HPC facility. The Project Scientist will also have a dedicated fraction of their time for research collaborations in computational astrophysics, and may lead and co-author publications with other UCSC scientists.

Applicants with expertise in: administration of high performance computers, networks, or storage; Experience in installation of software packages; Familiarity with job schedulers, cluster management software, or Lustre filesystems; and/or experience in markdown or related documentation languages and collaborative development platforms like GitHub are strongly encouraged to apply.

SALARY
Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in astronomy, physics, or a related field at the time of application.

Experience in UNIX/Linux computer administration, shell/Python scripting, and scientific programming.

DURATION OF POSITION
Initial appointment will be full time for one year. Reappointment may be considered contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding.
