Job Description

The Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU), Faculty for Physics and Astronomy, and the Thüringer Landessternwarte (TLS) invite applications in a joint appointment for the following new

Full Professorship (W3) for Astrophysics

The appointee (m/f/o) is responsible for establishing a research group at the TLS carrying out independent research programs in the broadly defined field of stellar and planetary systems. The scientific profile should be oriented to observational astronomy and with extensive experience in the use of large telescope facilities. Ideally, there should be a close relationship to the development of optical instrumentation.

Successful candidates are expected to have an excellent track record of publishing in international peer-review journals and demonstrated their competence in defining research projects and attracting research funding. The appointee is expected to actively participate in the educational programs at the Faculty for Physics and Astronomy at the FSU as part of the Bachelor and Master study programs in Physics and Astrophysics. Educational skills and teaching experience are therefore required.

The professorship is coupled with the establishment of the department "Stellar and Planetary Systems" at the TLS. The professor should be willing to assume the role of institute director if required.

The professorship will be the scientific manager of the Alfred Jensch Telescope. Moreover, an active participation in the establishment of a junior research group on the R&D of optical technologies in astronomy is expected. An intensive cooperation with the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy and generally the participation in the research focus Optics and Photonics of the University is strongly desired.

The FSU and TLS are striving for a balanced gender ratio at all levels. Severely disabled applicants will be given preferential consideration in the event of equal qualification.

Applications should comprise the usual documents including a full CV, copies of certificates of academic qualifications, a list of externally funded research projects, an overview of teaching experience, a list of publications and given talks and a statement about research interests and possible contributions to educational program at the university.
